Midwives provide regular physical examinations and health assessments tailored to a woman's life stage, including adolescence, reproductive years, pregnancy, and menopause. These appointments involve discussions about general health, family history, lifestyle factors, and any specific concerns.

Midwives often provide a more personalized and holistic approach to well-woman care. They tend to spend more time with their patients, getting to know their individual needs, preferences, and concerns.

Midwives prioritize patient education, empowering women to take an active role in their health. They provide detailed information, answer questions, and involve women in decision-making about their care.

Midwives typically have a strong emphasis on natural processes and interventions only when necessary. They may recommend lifestyle adjustments and natural remedies before resorting to medical interventions.

For women with low-risk pregnancies or well-woman needs, midwives can provide excellent care without the need for more intensive medical interventions typically offered by OB/GYNs.

Midwifery practices often have a more relaxed and homely setting, which can be comforting for some women during well-woman exams.

  • Annual Physical

An annual wellness physical, also known as a well-woman exam or check-up, typically includes a range of assessments and screenings aimed at evaluating your overall health and well-being. While the specific components may vary depending on your age, medical history, and any specific concerns, a standard annual wellness physical often includes:

    1. Medical History Review: Your healthcare provider will review your medical history, including any chronic conditions, medications, allergies, and family medical history.
    2. Vital Signs: Measurements of vital signs like blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate to assess your basic health.
    3. Physical Examination: A head-to-toe physical examination to check for any signs of illness or health issues.
    4. Height and Weight: Measurements to calculate your Body Mass Index (BMI), which is used to assess your weight relative to your height.
    5. Body Mass Index (BMI): This measurement helps determine if you are underweight, at a healthy weight, overweight, or obese.
  • Breast Exam

    • Breast Exam: A breast examination to check for any lumps or abnormalities, particularly important for women's health.
  • Pelvic exam and PAP Smear

    • Pelvic Exam and Pap Smear: A pelvic exam and Pap smear are often done to screen for cervical cancer and check for any gynecological issues. The need for these may vary based on age and medical history.
  • Mammogram or Thermography

    • Mammogram or alternative referrals: Mammograms are typically recommended for breast cancer screening, and the frequency may depend on your age and risk factors.
    • Thermography is a holistic approach to breast cancer screening that utilizes thermal imaging to detect variations in temperature and blood flow in breast tissue. It is non-invasive and does not involve radiation, offering an alternative method for early detection and monitoring, although its effectiveness as a standalone screening tool is still a subject of debate within the medical community.
  • Discussion of Lifestyle Factors

    • Discussion of Lifestyle Factors: Your healthcare provider may discuss your diet, exercise habits, alcohol consumption, tobacco use, and any other lifestyle factors that impact your health.
  • Mental Health Assessment

    • Mental Health Assessment: A conversation about your mental and emotional well-being, including any signs of depression, anxiety, or stress.
